Bayern Munich feeling confident Thomas Müller will extend contract

There was always going to come a time when Thomas Müller was not going to be getting regular starts at Bayern Munich, and it very much looks like now is that time. He is not Thomas Tuchel’s first choice in the attacking line despite being able to occupy a number of different tactical roles in midfield and attack, but that does not, in any way, take away from his importance in the squad. He still plays a pivotal role and is one of the core members of the club's internal leadership council alongside Manuel Neuer.

Since this season has started, Müller’s contract at Bayern and his future has been a subject that has been looming large in terms of squad planning for the future. Tuchel is keen on bringing in defensive reinforcements as well as a defensive midfielder during the winter transfer window, but Müller is also one of a handful of players with upcoming expiring contracts. Sven Ulreich and Neuer have just recently signed one-year extensions, and it is the club’s hope that Bayern’s Raumdeuter will soon do the same.

Per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern’s front office is now increasingly confident that Müller will wind up extending his current contract at the club until 2025. The club’s hierarchy is well aware of how much of a legend he is at the club and his name is quite simply synonymous with FC Bayern. That alone does not necessarily merit an extension, but there are not any signs suggesting his performances on the pitch are taking a drastic dip despite not starting as much as he would probably like to. From a total of 15 appearances across all competitions, he has tallied two goals and five assists, the most recent (goal) of which came during Bayern’s shock 2-1 loss to FC Saarbrücken in the DFB-Pokal second round.

As far as a timetable is concerned, Plettenberg reports that the club is expecting the next steps in the process for a contract extension to take place around Christmas time, as sporting director Christoph Freund is pushing for Müller to get the extension done.
