Bayern Munich Alumni: FC Barcelona to purposefully bench Robert Lewandowski and terminate his contract?

 

Previously, it was reported that FC Barcelona was looking to terminate Robert Lewandowski’s contract after signing a young up-and-comer as well as La Masia youth stepping up to the plate. Remember that weird clause Barça put into the ex-Bayern Munich striker’s contract? Well, according to new rumors, they may eventually exercise that clause.

Spanish news outlet Sport via Daily Mail reports that the clause states that the Catalans are allowed to terminate the Pole’s contract after his third year if he does not feature in 55% of games played in that season, which is the 2024/25 season. Lewandowski’s contract runs until 2026.

The 35-year-old has seen a slight increase in injuries and a drop in form in general. His heyday back in Munich looks to be now in the rear view, as glorious and world-beating as it was.

Lewandowski already has one La Liga title to his name, and is still a potent threat in front of goal. His contract with Barcelona was a long one, though. The lack of service currently on offer at Barça as well as the Catalans’ youth influx might eventually cause it to come to an early end.
